This 6-day Tanzania birding safari has been carefully crafted to expose travellers to some of the country’s most productive birding spots while also immersing them in Tanzania’s spectacular wildlife and landscapes. The journey takes you through a range of ecosystems, including freshwater lakes, montane forests, acacia woodlands, open savannahs, riverine habitats and volcanic highlands. Each day on safari is a unique and exciting experience, with the opportunity to see a fantastic range of resident and migratory birds in diverse environments.
On this safari you will visit Arusha National Park, Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Highlands and Tarangire National Park all have their own individual birds and scenery. Watch out for colourful turacos, hornbills, kingfishers, bee-eaters, lovebirds, starlings, sunbirds, weavers, bustards and an amazing variety of birds of prey, including eagles, hawks, vultures and falcons. Seasonal migrations also add more species from Europe, Asia and other parts of Africa, making birding even better.

Safari Itinerary
Our birding adventure begins after breakfast with a short drive to Arusha National Park, one of Tanzania's hidden gems and an excellent introduction to the country's rich birdlife. The park's diverse habitats, including montane forests, open grasslands, freshwater lakes, and wetlands, attract a remarkable variety of bird species. As you explore the park, keep an eye out for Hartlaub's Turaco, Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, African Fish Eagle, Crowned Eagle, Narina Trogon, and numerous colourful sunbirds and weavers. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided walking safari accompanied by an armed ranger, offering a unique opportunity to experience nature on foot. Walking through the park allows you to appreciate the smaller details often missed during game drives while enjoying close encounters with giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and other wildlife. The scenic backdrop of Mount Meru and the tranquil Momella Lakes provide excellent opportunities for bird photography before returning to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Have an early breakfast and depart Arusha and drive towards the world-famous Serengeti National Park. The drive takes you through the dramatic scenery of the Great Rift Valley and the Ngorongoro Highlands before descending to the wide Serengeti plains. As the ecosystems evolve along the journey, different bird species adapted to each habitat will be supported, providing many birding opportunities. Arriving in the Serengeti, you are greeted by open plains teeming with a mind-boggling variety of birds, from secretary birds striding across the grasslands to the immense glory of Kori bustards and a variety of raptors soaring overhead. Upon arrival in the park in the afternoon, you will enjoy your first birding game drive as well as look for iconic African wildlife such as lions, elephants, giraffes and cheetahs. Spectacular scenery and rich birdlife combine to make for a memorable introduction to one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations.

Today is dedicated to exploring the diverse ecosystems of Serengeti National Park. With over 500 recorded bird species, the Serengeti offers exceptional birdwatching opportunities throughout the year. The park's endless plains, riverine forests, rocky kopjes, and seasonal wetlands provide habitats for a wide variety of resident and migratory birds. During the day, you may encounter species such as the Southern Ground Hornbill, Grey-headed Kingfisher, Fischer's Lovebird, Black-bellied Bustard, Rufous-tailed Weaver, Martial Eagle, Bateleur, and numerous species of vultures and hawks. While focusing on birdlife, you will also have excellent chances to observe the Serengeti's famous wildlife, including large herds of wildebeest and zebra, lions resting beneath acacia trees, and perhaps even a leopard hidden among the branches of a riverside tree. A full day in the Serengeti offers endless opportunities for both birding enthusiasts and wildlife photographers.

After breakfast, head out for a last morning birding game drive in the Serengeti before making your way towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route is excellent for birding, as you move from the open plains to the cooler, higher country of the Ngorongoro Highlands, where the bird species change quite significantly. The forests and highland habitat around Ngorongoro support a number of special species, such as the Schalow's Turaco, White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher, Tacazze Sunbird, Eastern Double-collared Sunbird and various forest birds that are seldom seen in the lowlands. There are fantastic views of the Ngorongoro Crater and surrounding volcanic scenery en route and lots of photo opportunities. In the late afternoon, make your way to the delightful town of Karatu, where you will rest and prepare for the next stage of your birding adventure.

After breakfast, depart Karatu and drive to Tarangire National Park, one of the best birdwatching spots in East Africa. The park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to ancient baobab trees, large herds of elephants and the life-giving Tarangire River, and boasts over 550 species of birds.
While exploring the park you may see yellow-collared lovebirds, ashy starlings, northern pied babblers, Von der Decken’s hornbills, red-and-yellow barbets, African hawk eagles and a variety of colourful bee-eaters and rollers. Tarangire has varied habitats of riverine woodlands, swamps, grasslands and acacia forests, all home to an incredible variety of birdlife year round. The afternoon game drive gives you plenty of time to enjoy both the birdlife and the impressive concentrations of wildlife for which Tarangire is famous.

Enjoy an early morning birding and wildlife drive in Tarangire National Park, when bird activity is at its peak and the soft morning light creates excellent conditions for photography. This final game drive offers another opportunity to spot some of the park's remarkable bird species, including lovebirds, hornbills, barbets, and birds of prey, while also enjoying sightings of elephants, giraffes, zebras, and other wildlife. After breakfast, continue with a short birding drive before departing Tarangire and heading towards Kilimanjaro International Airport. Arriving at the airport in time for your onwards flight, you will conclude your Tanzania birding safari with unforgettable memories of the country's extraordinary birdlife, spectacular landscapes, and world-class wildlife experiences.
