Mount Meru Trekking
Climb Mount Meru in 5 or 6 days and experience Tanzania’s second-highest peak with breathtaking views, wildlife encounters, and a rewarding summit. A perfect alternative or acclimatization hike before Kilimanjaro.
Overview
Mount Meru (4,566m) is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and a spectacular trekking destination located inside Arusha National Park. Often overshadowed by its big brother Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers an equally thrilling climb with fewer crowds, stunning views, and rich wildlife encounters along the trail. Both the 5-day and 6-day itineraries provide a rewarding ascent to Socialist Peak, with the journey passing through lush rainforests, high-altitude moorlands, and dramatic crater ridges.
The 5-day trek is perfect for fit hikers or those short on time, combining three days on the mountain with two nights in Arusha for arrival and departure. It’s also a fantastic choice for acclimatization before Kilimanjaro. The 6-day trek follows the same route but includes an additional acclimatization day—ideal for travelers who prefer a slower pace, better altitude adjustment, or more time to enjoy the serene landscapes.
Guided by an armed ranger due to the presence of wildlife like giraffes, buffalo, monkeys, and zebras, the trail is both scenic and adventurous. The highlight is reaching the summit at sunrise, where sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the glowing crater below reward every step. Whether you choose the 5-day or 6-day option, Mount Meru promises a soulful, wild, and unforgettable trekking experience in the heart of Tanzania.
