Mount Kilimanjaro Shira Route Trekking

Explore Kilimanjaro’s Shira Route — a high-altitude western trail with open alpine views, dramatic landscapes, and low foot traffic. Ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a remote and scenic ascent.

Overview

he Shira Route is one of the lesser-used and more remote trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its stunning views, rugged landscapes, and early high-altitude entry. It begins at Shira Gate, located on the western side of the mountain, and starts at an elevation of over 3,500 meters — making it unique among all other Kilimanjaro routes. The route was originally a wild and remote wilderness trail, now considered a variation of the Lemosho Route, as they eventually merge after the Shira Plateau. Unlike Lemosho, however, Shira skips the rainforest section and instead starts with a drive directly to the Shira Plateau, which can be both an advantage and a disadvantage: while it offers quick access to alpine views and open landscapes, it also comes with an increased risk of altitude sickness due to the sudden elevation gain on the first day. The trail then crosses the dramatic Shira Plateau, continues toward Lava Tower, and navigates the scenic Barranco Wall, following the familiar southern circuit up to Barafu Base Camp and finally Uhuru Peak. The descent is completed via the Mweka Route. The Shira Route is a fully supported camping trek, and although it shares many segments with Lemosho, it remains less crowded, making it appealing to trekkers seeking a more off-the-beaten-path Kilimanjaro experience. It also features wide open views of Mount Meru, the Shira Cathedral, and the Kibo summit cone, offering ample opportunities for breathtaking photography. The route is best suited for experienced hikers or those who have already acclimatized to altitude, as the starting elevation may be too high for some first-time climbers. For those who want to explore Kilimanjaro’s highlands in relative solitude and enjoy a fast-track into the mountain’s upper ecological zones, the Shira Route offers a unique and unforgettable adventure on the Roof of Africa.
