Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Trekking

Climb Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route — the only route with hut accommodations. A 5–6 day trek offering gradual trails, rainforest to alpine scenery, and a classic summit experience perfect for first-time climbers.

Overview

The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest, most established, and most comfortable trail to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 meters. This route is renowned for its relative ease, scenic beauty, and hut accommodations, making it a popular choice among first-time climbers and those seeking a less rugged trekking experience. Unlike all other Kilimanjaro routes that require camping, the Marangu Route provides permanent mountain huts at each overnight stop, complete with beds and basic dining facilities — a major advantage for climbers preferring not to sleep in tents.

The trek typically takes 5 to 6 days, starting from Marangu Gate on the southeastern side of the mountain and passing through five distinct ecological zones — from lush rainforest, moorlands, and alpine desert to the arctic summit zone. Key overnight stops include Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, and Kibo Hut, with the final push to Uhuru Peak beginning around midnight for a dramatic sunrise summit experience. The descent follows the same trail down, making it the only Kilimanjaro route with a same-ascent-and-descent path, which can feel repetitive for some but aids in quicker evacuation if needed.

While it is often seen as an “easier” route, Marangu still poses serious altitude challenges and should not be underestimated. Proper acclimatization is critical, especially for climbers choosing the shorter 5-day itinerary. Trekkers enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak, unique flora such as giant lobelias and senecios, and a gradual trail that is physically manageable but still demanding. The Marangu Route is ideal for those looking for comfort, cultural history, and a classic Kilimanjaro journey, with the added benefit of a structured trail and experienced guides.
