6 Day Tanzania Great Migration Safari

6 Day Tanzania Great Migration Safari

Overview

The 6 Day Tanzania Great Migration Safari is an exciting wildlife adventure through some of the most remarkable destinations on Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. The journey combines Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, Central Serengeti and the remote Northern Serengeti, providing travelers with an opportunity to experience diverse ecosystems while following the legendary Great Wildebeest Migration.

Your adventure begins in Arusha with a drive to Tarangire National Park, a beautiful wilderness famous for its large elephant population, ancient baobab trees and the Tarangire River. The river provides an important source of water for wildlife, particularly during the dry season, attracting elephants, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, buffaloes and numerous antelope species. Predators such as lions and leopards may also be encountered while exploring the park.

After your Tarangire game drive, the journey continues toward Karatu, a peaceful highland town located close to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The following morning, you will travel to the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife destinations. Formed by the collapse of an ancient volcano, the enormous caldera contains grasslands, woodland, wetlands and freshwater areas that support an impressive concentration of animals throughout the year.

During your crater game drive, you may encounter lions, elephants, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, hippos and gazelles. The crater is also one of Tanzania’s important habitats for the endangered black rhinoceros. After exploring Ngorongoro, your safari continues toward the legendary plains of Serengeti National Park.

Your first Serengeti experience takes place in the Central Serengeti, particularly around the wildlife-rich Seronera region. Central Serengeti is renowned for excellent year-round game viewing and a high concentration of predators. Lions, leopards and cheetahs are among the major attractions, while elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and numerous plains animals can also be encountered.

After a half-day exploring Central Serengeti, the journey continues north through the changing landscapes of the national park. Wildlife viewing continues along the way as you approach the Northern Serengeti, where the main Great Migration experience of this itinerary takes place.

Between approximately July and October, enormous herds of wildebeest and zebras normally move through the Northern Serengeti. The Mara River becomes one of the major obstacles along their annual journey, and thousands of animals may gather near its banks before attempting to cross. These dramatic river crossings are among Africa’s most celebrated wildlife events. Since the migration is a completely natural phenomenon, the timing and location of crossings cannot be guaranteed.

This itinerary provides two complete days in the Northern Serengeti, creating valuable time to follow the migration herds and explore different sections of the region. Rather than rushing between destinations, your guide can respond to current wildlife movements and spend more time in productive areas. Even when a river crossing does not occur, the sight of enormous herds spread across the northern plains can be spectacular.

The Northern Serengeti also supports excellent resident wildlife. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles and spotted hyenas are among the animals that may be encountered during your game drives.

On the final day, you will leave the Northern Serengeti and travel toward Kilimanjaro International Airport using the Lake Natron route. This adventurous journey takes you through remote Maasai country, rugged valleys and volcanic landscapes, with possible views of Lake Natron and Ol Doinyo Lengai. Combining classic safari destinations, extended migration viewing and a scenic overland finale, this six-day adventure provides a comprehensive introduction to the wildlife and landscapes of northern Tanzania.

FAQs

The Great Migration is the largest land-based wildlife migration on Earth, involving over 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebras, and thousands of gazelles as they move in a circular path through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. This incredible journey is filled with dramatic scenes of river crossings, predator hunts, calving, and long-distance movement—making it one of the most breathtaking wildlife spectacles in the world.

The migration is year-round, but the best time depends on what you want to see:

  • Dec–Mar (Calving Season): Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) – Wildebeest give birth; predator action is intense.

  • Apr–May (Green Season): Central Serengeti – Herds begin moving north.

  • Jun–July (Grumeti River Crossings): Western Serengeti – Smaller river crossings; good predator sightings.

  • Aug–Oct (Mara River Crossings): Northern Serengeti – Dramatic river crossings, crocodile attacks.

  • Nov: Herds return south toward Ndutu.

No. While wildebeest dominate the scene, the migration includes zebras, gazelles, and eland, as well as predators like lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals, and vultures. It's an interconnected drama of prey and predators across the plains.

The migration is continuous and cyclical, with the herds covering 1,800+ km (1,100+ miles) each year. It’s a full-year phenomenon, not just a single event.

Ideally, 6–12 days allow for deep exploration, including time in Serengeti, Ndutu, and/or Ngorongoro Crater. This provides flexibility to track the herds and enjoy other parks along the way.

Yes! The migration can be part of a romantic honeymoon, family safari, or photography tour. It’s perfect for all ages, although kids under 6 may need custom arrangements.

While Kenya's Maasai Mara is part of the migration route, Tanzania hosts 80% of the migration—including calving season and longer durations of the herds' stay. Tanzania offers more diversity and larger wildlife populations over a longer period.

Yes. Popular combinations include:

Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have crystal-clear water and the least tidal movement—perfect for swimming and beach activities. Paje and Jambiani are best for kitesurfing.

Most travelers prefer 3–6 nights, depending on whether they want pure relaxation or a mix of activities.
