5 Day Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar

5 Day Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar

Overview

Experience three of Tanzania’s most celebrated safari destinations with our 5 Day Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar, a carefully designed fly-in safari combining the endless plains of Central Serengeti, the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater and the elephant-rich landscapes of Tarangire National Park. This itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to temporarily exchange Zanzibar’s tropical beaches for an authentic mainland wildlife adventure without spending unnecessary time on long road transfers.

Your safari begins with a scheduled flight from Zanzibar directly into Central Serengeti. Flying into the heart of the Serengeti allows you to start your wildlife experience almost immediately after landing rather than spending most of your first day driving from Arusha. Upon arrival at Seronera Airstrip, your professional private safari driver-guide will welcome you with a dedicated 4×4 Land Cruiser and begin your first game drive.

Central Serengeti, particularly the Seronera region, is one of Tanzania’s most productive year-round wildlife areas. Its combination of open grasslands, rocky kopjes, river valleys and permanent water sources supports an impressive variety of resident animals. Lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest and numerous antelope species can all be encountered, while the region is particularly renowned for opportunities to search for big cats.

The second day is completely dedicated to Central Serengeti, giving you the time needed to explore different habitats without rushing. Your private driver-guide can adapt the game drive according to wildlife movements and your interests. Search for lions resting around rocky kopjes, cheetahs scanning the open plains and leopards using riverine trees and woodland as cover.

Depending on the season and natural movement of the herds, parts of the greater Serengeti ecosystem can also provide opportunities to encounter the Great Migration. However, migration movements vary throughout the year according to rainfall, water and grazing conditions, and exact wildlife locations can never be guaranteed.

Hot safari lunches can be arranged during your game drives, allowing you to remain in the wilderness and maximise your wildlife viewing rather than returning to the lodge during the middle of the day.

On the third day, enjoy another half day exploring Central Serengeti before beginning your journey towards the Ngorongoro Highlands. This arrangement gives you additional Serengeti game-viewing time while also positioning you conveniently for the following morning’s Ngorongoro Crater experience.

The journey towards Karatu remains part of your safari. Wildlife can still be encountered as you leave the Serengeti plains and travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Gradually, the landscape changes from open savannah to the cooler, greener highlands surrounding Ngorongoro.

Your fourth day is dedicated to one of Africa’s most extraordinary natural wildlife areas: the Ngorongoro Crater. After breakfast, travel towards the crater rim before descending approximately 600 metres onto the floor of the ancient volcanic caldera.

Within the crater, search for lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, jackals and numerous antelope species. Ngorongoro is also an important habitat for the endangered black rhinoceros, offering an opportunity to search for this rare member of Africa’s Big Five, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

After your crater game drive and hot safari lunch, ascend to the highlands and return to Karatu for a relaxed final evening before the last safari destination.

Day five takes you to Tarangire National Park, providing a completely different landscape from Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Tarangire is famous for its enormous baobab trees, beautiful savannah and impressive elephant populations. Depending on the season, you may also encounter giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes and predators including lions.

After exploring Tarangire and enjoying your final hot safari lunch, continue towards Kilimanjaro International Airport for your scheduled flight back to Zanzibar.

By combining a direct flight into Serengeti with a one-way safari route through Ngorongoro and Tarangire, this five-day programme uses your time efficiently while still allowing each destination to offer something different. It is an excellent choice for couples, families, friends and small groups looking for a complete Northern Tanzania safari experience as part of their Zanzibar holiday.

FAQs

Yes. Zanzibar can easily be combined with a mainland Tanzania safari. Daily domestic flights connect Zanzibar with safari gateways such as Arusha, Kilimanjaro and airstrips in or near major national parks. Depending on your available time, you can take a short 2-day safari or plan a longer private safari before returning to Zanzibar.

For travellers looking for a short safari, Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater make an excellent combination. With additional days, you can include Serengeti National Park for a more complete Northern Circuit safari. The best option depends on how many days you have, your budget and the wildlife experience you are looking for.

We recommend at least two days for a meaningful safari from Zanzibar. A 2-day itinerary can combine Tarangire and Ngorongoro, while 3 to 4 days allows a more relaxed programme. For travellers who want to include Serengeti, Great Migration areas or multiple nights in the wilderness, 4 to 6 days or longer provides a better experience.

Yes. A 2-day private safari from Zanzibar is ideal for travellers with limited time. You can fly from Zanzibar to the Arusha or Kilimanjaro area, explore Tarangire National Park on the first day, stay overnight near Karatu, and visit the Ngorongoro Crater on the second day before continuing to the airport for your flight back to Zanzibar.

Yes, a one-day safari from Zanzibar is possible using domestic flights to selected parks. However, if your schedule allows, we recommend at least two days because it provides more wildlife viewing time and makes the experience less dependent on flight schedules. Short fly-in safaris are particularly useful for travellers who want to keep most of their holiday in Zanzibar.

Yes. Serengeti can be reached from Zanzibar using domestic flights, making a fly-in safari an excellent option when you want to reduce driving time. Depending on your itinerary, you can fly into the Serengeti and continue your safari by private 4x4 vehicle, or combine Serengeti with Ngorongoro, Tarangire and other Northern Circuit destinations.

Yes. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most popular destinations to combine with a Zanzibar holiday. You can fly from Zanzibar to the mainland and continue by private safari vehicle to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is commonly combined with Tarangire on short 2- or 3-day safaris.

Popular choices include Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on your available days and preferred routing, other destinations can also be included. We design each safari according to your available time rather than trying to fit too many parks into a short programme.

Domestic flights can be included in your Tanzania safari from Zanzibar package when specified in the itinerary and quotation. We can arrange the necessary flights together with airport transfers, safari vehicle, accommodation and park arrangements, giving you one coordinated programme from Zanzibar to the safari and back.

Yes. Scheduled domestic flights operate between Zanzibar and safari airstrips serving different parts of the Serengeti, subject to route schedules and availability. Flying directly into the Serengeti can save significant travel time and is particularly useful for shorter safaris, honeymoon trips and travellers who prefer a fly-in safari experience.

Yes, when you book a private safari with Tanzaniatrail Experience, your safari vehicle and professional driver-guide are reserved for your party. You will not be combined with unrelated travellers. This gives you greater flexibility with wildlife viewing, photography stops and the overall pace of your safari.

Yes. A safari from Zanzibar can be an excellent addition to a family beach holiday. We can adjust the programme according to the children's ages, select suitable family-friendly accommodation and avoid unnecessarily long driving days. A private safari vehicle also gives families greater flexibility for stops and daily schedules.

Yes. Zanzibar and safari are one of Tanzania's best honeymoon combinations. Couples can leave their Zanzibar beach resort for a private mainland safari and include romantic lodges, luxury tented camps, sundowners, bush meals and other special experiences before returning to Zanzibar or continuing their journey home.

Yes. Luxury safaris from Zanzibar can include domestic flights, private airport transfers, an exclusive 4x4 safari vehicle, high-end lodges or luxury tented camps and personalised safari experiences. Fly-in options can also reduce road travel and maximise the amount of time spent inside wildlife areas.

Yes. A Great Migration safari can be arranged from Zanzibar, but the correct Serengeti region depends on your travel dates. Different stages of the migration occur in different areas throughout the year. We design the itinerary according to the season and use suitable flights and camps to position you close to the expected movement of the herds.

Yes. Between approximately January and March, a safari from Zanzibar can be designed around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti during the Great Migration calving season. Flying from Zanzibar helps maximise your safari time, and we recommend spending several days in the area rather than trying to experience the calving season as a rushed day trip.

You can normally leave unnecessary beach luggage securely at your Zanzibar accommodation if you are returning to the same hotel, subject to the hotel's policy. For domestic safari flights, baggage limits can be more restrictive than international flights, so we provide the applicable luggage information before travel. Soft-sided bags are generally the most practical option.

Yes. Your safari can be designed to finish with a domestic flight back to Zanzibar. Depending on the route, you may fly from Kilimanjaro, Arusha or a safari airstrip directly to Zanzibar. We coordinate the itinerary and transfers around the available flight schedule to make the transition between safari and beach as smooth as possible.

Depending on your selected package, inclusions can cover domestic flights, airport transfers, a private 4x4 safari Land Cruiser with pop-up roof, professional driver-guide, accommodation, meals, park and conservation fees, Ngorongoro Crater fees where applicable, drinking water and safari activities. The exact inclusions are clearly shown in each itinerary and quotation.

Yes. Every safari from Zanzibar can be customised according to your available days, budget, accommodation preference and interests.
