5 Day Tanzania Great Migration Safari from Zanzibar
Overview
Experience the spectacular Great Migration and two of Tanzania’s most celebrated wildlife regions with our 5 Day Tanzania Great Migration Safari from Zanzibar. This carefully designed private fly-in safari combines the seasonal migration grounds of Northern Serengeti, the wildlife-rich plains of Central Serengeti and the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, creating an exceptional five-day journey from the beaches of Zanzibar into the heart of Tanzania’s wilderness.
This itinerary is particularly designed around the Northern Serengeti migration season, generally associated with the period from around July through October. During this time, large concentrations of wildebeest and zebras can move across the northern Serengeti ecosystem as part of their continuous annual journey in search of fresh grazing and water.
Northern Serengeti is especially famous for the Mara River. During the migration season, herds may gather across the northern plains and around different sections of the river as they move between grazing areas. At certain moments, wildebeest and zebras may attempt dramatic river crossings, creating one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife spectacles.
However, Mara River crossings are completely natural and unpredictable. Herds may gather near the river before turning away, cross at a different location or remain on the surrounding plains. Crossings can therefore never be guaranteed on a particular day.
Your adventure begins with a scheduled flight from Zanzibar directly towards Northern Serengeti. Flying into the migration region avoids the lengthy road journey from Arusha and allows you to begin your safari shortly after arriving at the bush airstrip.
Your professional private safari driver-guide will meet you with a dedicated 4×4 Land Cruiser and begin exploring the northern plains. Your first afternoon introduces you to the migration ecosystem before the second day provides a complete day dedicated to following current wildlife movements.
Having a private safari vehicle is particularly valuable during the Great Migration. Your guide can adjust the route according to the location of the herds, recent wildlife information and conditions around the Mara River rather than following a fixed shared-safari schedule.
Northern Serengeti also offers much more than wildebeest. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and numerous antelope species can be encountered throughout the ecosystem.
On Day Three, enjoy another half day in Northern Serengeti, providing a final opportunity to search for migration activity before beginning your journey south towards Central Serengeti. The drive itself remains part of the safari, with wildlife opportunities continuing as you travel through changing landscapes.
Central Serengeti provides an excellent contrast to the seasonal focus of the north. The Seronera region combines grasslands, rocky kopjes, river valleys and permanent water sources, creating productive habitats for resident wildlife throughout the year. The area is particularly rewarding for opportunities to search for lions, leopards and cheetahs.
After spending the night in Central Serengeti, Day Four begins with another morning game drive. This gives you time to explore Seronera before travelling towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Karatu.
Hot safari lunches can be arranged during the journey, allowing you to maximise your wildlife experience without unnecessary returns to the lodge during the day.
The final day is dedicated to the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater. After an early breakfast in Karatu, travel towards the crater rim and descend approximately 600 metres onto the floor of this enormous volcanic caldera.
Search for lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and numerous antelope species. Ngorongoro is also an important habitat for the endangered black rhinoceros, although sightings of this rare animal can never be guaranteed.
After your crater game drive and hot safari lunch, ascend through the Ngorongoro Highlands and continue towards Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey.
The strength of this five-day itinerary is its progression through three different safari environments. Northern Serengeti provides the seasonal Great Migration focus and Mara River ecosystem, Central Serengeti adds excellent year-round wildlife and big-cat opportunities, while Ngorongoro Crater provides an outstanding final wildlife experience. Combined with a direct flight from Zanzibar and private safari arrangements, it is an excellent choice for travellers wanting to experience the Great Migration while seeing more of Tanzania within only five days.

FAQs
Yes. Zanzibar can easily be combined with a mainland Tanzania safari. Daily domestic flights connect Zanzibar with safari gateways such as Arusha, Kilimanjaro and airstrips in or near major national parks. Depending on your available time, you can take a short 2-day safari or plan a longer private safari before returning to Zanzibar.
For travellers looking for a short safari, Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater make an excellent combination. With additional days, you can include Serengeti National Park for a more complete Northern Circuit safari. The best option depends on how many days you have, your budget and the wildlife experience you are looking for.
We recommend at least two days for a meaningful safari from Zanzibar. A 2-day itinerary can combine Tarangire and Ngorongoro, while 3 to 4 days allows a more relaxed programme. For travellers who want to include Serengeti, Great Migration areas or multiple nights in the wilderness, 4 to 6 days or longer provides a better experience.
Yes. A 2-day private safari from Zanzibar is ideal for travellers with limited time. You can fly from Zanzibar to the Arusha or Kilimanjaro area, explore Tarangire National Park on the first day, stay overnight near Karatu, and visit the Ngorongoro Crater on the second day before continuing to the airport for your flight back to Zanzibar.
Yes, a one-day safari from Zanzibar is possible using domestic flights to selected parks. However, if your schedule allows, we recommend at least two days because it provides more wildlife viewing time and makes the experience less dependent on flight schedules. Short fly-in safaris are particularly useful for travellers who want to keep most of their holiday in Zanzibar.
Yes. Serengeti can be reached from Zanzibar using domestic flights, making a fly-in safari an excellent option when you want to reduce driving time. Depending on your itinerary, you can fly into the Serengeti and continue your safari by private 4x4 vehicle, or combine Serengeti with Ngorongoro, Tarangire and other Northern Circuit destinations.
Yes. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most popular destinations to combine with a Zanzibar holiday. You can fly from Zanzibar to the mainland and continue by private safari vehicle to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is commonly combined with Tarangire on short 2- or 3-day safaris.
Popular choices include Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on your available days and preferred routing, other destinations can also be included. We design each safari according to your available time rather than trying to fit too many parks into a short programme.
Domestic flights can be included in your Tanzania safari from Zanzibar package when specified in the itinerary and quotation. We can arrange the necessary flights together with airport transfers, safari vehicle, accommodation and park arrangements, giving you one coordinated programme from Zanzibar to the safari and back.
Yes. Scheduled domestic flights operate between Zanzibar and safari airstrips serving different parts of the Serengeti, subject to route schedules and availability. Flying directly into the Serengeti can save significant travel time and is particularly useful for shorter safaris, honeymoon trips and travellers who prefer a fly-in safari experience.
Yes, when you book a private safari with Tanzaniatrail Experience, your safari vehicle and professional driver-guide are reserved for your party. You will not be combined with unrelated travellers. This gives you greater flexibility with wildlife viewing, photography stops and the overall pace of your safari.
Yes. A safari from Zanzibar can be an excellent addition to a family beach holiday. We can adjust the programme according to the children's ages, select suitable family-friendly accommodation and avoid unnecessarily long driving days. A private safari vehicle also gives families greater flexibility for stops and daily schedules.
Yes. Zanzibar and safari are one of Tanzania's best honeymoon combinations. Couples can leave their Zanzibar beach resort for a private mainland safari and include romantic lodges, luxury tented camps, sundowners, bush meals and other special experiences before returning to Zanzibar or continuing their journey home.
Yes. Luxury safaris from Zanzibar can include domestic flights, private airport transfers, an exclusive 4x4 safari vehicle, high-end lodges or luxury tented camps and personalised safari experiences. Fly-in options can also reduce road travel and maximise the amount of time spent inside wildlife areas.
Yes. A Great Migration safari can be arranged from Zanzibar, but the correct Serengeti region depends on your travel dates. Different stages of the migration occur in different areas throughout the year. We design the itinerary according to the season and use suitable flights and camps to position you close to the expected movement of the herds.
Yes. Between approximately January and March, a safari from Zanzibar can be designed around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti during the Great Migration calving season. Flying from Zanzibar helps maximise your safari time, and we recommend spending several days in the area rather than trying to experience the calving season as a rushed day trip.
You can normally leave unnecessary beach luggage securely at your Zanzibar accommodation if you are returning to the same hotel, subject to the hotel's policy. For domestic safari flights, baggage limits can be more restrictive than international flights, so we provide the applicable luggage information before travel. Soft-sided bags are generally the most practical option.
Yes. Your safari can be designed to finish with a domestic flight back to Zanzibar. Depending on the route, you may fly from Kilimanjaro, Arusha or a safari airstrip directly to Zanzibar. We coordinate the itinerary and transfers around the available flight schedule to make the transition between safari and beach as smooth as possible.
Depending on your selected package, inclusions can cover domestic flights, airport transfers, a private 4x4 safari Land Cruiser with pop-up roof, professional driver-guide, accommodation, meals, park and conservation fees, Ngorongoro Crater fees where applicable, drinking water and safari activities. The exact inclusions are clearly shown in each itinerary and quotation.
Yes. Every safari from Zanzibar can be customised according to your available days, budget, accommodation preference and interests. We can create private safaris, family safaris, honeymoon journeys, luxury safaris, Great Migration experiences and calving season safaris. Whether you have only two days or want a longer mainland adventure, we can design the safari to fit naturally into your Zanzibar holiday.
