Overview

Experience the best of Northern Tanzania on this unforgettable 5 Day Tanzania Calving Season Safari, a trip that is designed to showcase the spectacular Great Wildebeest Migration during the calving season while exploring three of Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife destinations. Tarangire National Park with its elephant-rich landscapes, the stunning Ndutu Plains and the endless savannahs of Central Serengeti, combine for exceptional wildlife encounters, dramatic scenery and unforgettable moments for nature lovers, photographers and adventure seekers alike.

From January to March the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu region are home to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth. In that period over two million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles migrate to the short-grass plains rich in nutrients to give birth. Every day thousands of wildebeest calves are born. It’s an incredible display of new life, attracting some of the most formidable predators in Africa. With an abundance of prey, lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and jackals are all present, making every game drive exciting and totally unpredictable.

Your adventure begins in Tarangire National Park, a hidden gem in Tanzania and an elephant lover’s paradise. The park is famous for its ancient baobab trees, seasonal swamps and the life-giving Tarangire River and harbours one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa. During your game drive you will see elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, warthogs and a host of predators including lions and leopards. Tarangire is also one of the best birdwatching destinations in Tanzania with over 550 bird species recorded in the park.

The journey continues through the spectacular Ngorongoro Conservation Area with breathtaking views of the highlands before descending into the wildlife-rich Ndutu region. Ndutu is one of the few places in Tanzania where off-road driving is allowed. This gives veteran safari guides the opportunity to position vehicles in the best locations for viewing and photography of wildlife. The unique advantage enables guests to get closer to predator action whilst still respecting wildlife and conservation laws.

A full day in Ndutu gives you the opportunity to soak up the heart of calving season. Watch newborn wildebeest calves take their first steps minutes after birth with protective mothers close by. The open plains are ideal hunting grounds for cheetahs, lions, hyenas and leopards and provide photographers with incredible opportunities of capturing dramatic wildlife behaviour. Aside from the migration, Ndutu is also home to elephants, giraffes, bat-eared foxes, servals, jackals, hippos and hundreds of bird species that thrive around Lake Ndutu and the surrounding acacia woodlands.

From here the adventure moves north to the legendary Central Serengeti, one of Africa’s most fabled safari destinations. Central Serengeti is famous for its vast golden plains, rocky kopjes and abundant resident wildlife, offering outstanding game viewing all year round. The central part of the country still holds high numbers of lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, crocs and many, many species of antelope even during the migration season in the south. The famous Seronera Valley with its permanent rivers attracts wildlife all year round and has some of the highest predator densities in Africa.

Travel in specially designed 4×4 safari vehicle equipped with large viewing windows and pop up roof for excellent viewing and photography of wildlife throughout your safari. Tanzania is one of the world’s premier safari destinations and with an experienced English-speaking safari guide you will learn fascinating facts about animal behaviour, migration patterns, conservation efforts and the different ecosystems.

This safari combines seeing the dramatic Great Migration calving season with exploring Tanzania’s classic national parks.
