3 Day Tanzania Family Safari From Zanzibar
Overview
Create unforgettable family memories beyond the beaches of Zanzibar with our 3-Day Tanzania Family Safari from Zanzibar. This carefully designed private safari introduces families to the wildlife, landscapes and natural wonders of northern Tanzania while keeping the journey comfortable, exciting and manageable for both adults and children. Following the route from Zanzibar to Arusha National Park, Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, the safari provides three very different experiences within only three days.
Your family adventure begins with a convenient flight from Zanzibar to Arusha. Rather than immediately spending several hours driving to a distant national park, your first day is dedicated to nearby Arusha National Park. This creates a comfortable introduction to the mainland, particularly for families travelling with children.
Arusha National Park offers a beautiful combination of forest, open grassland, the Momella Lakes and scenery dominated by Mount Meru. During your game viewing, the family can search for giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, warthogs, monkeys and numerous bird species. The variety of landscapes makes this an excellent first introduction to Tanzania’s natural environment.
One of the special experiences available in Arusha National Park is a guided walking safari. Family members who meet the applicable age and safety requirements can join an authorised armed park ranger and experience the wilderness outside the safari vehicle. Walking provides an opportunity to learn about animal tracks, plants, insects, birds and other smaller details that children and adults may not normally notice during a traditional game drive. Where younger children cannot participate, the programme can be adjusted with appropriate alternative game-viewing arrangements.
After your Arusha National Park experience, continue to carefully select family-friendly accommodation where everyone can relax, enjoy dinner and prepare for the following day.
Day two takes you to Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania’s most enjoyable wildlife destinations for a family safari. Tarangire is particularly famous for its elephants, and children may have the opportunity to watch elephant families feeding, walking and interacting in their natural environment.
The park is also characterised by enormous baobab trees that create one of northern Tanzania’s most recognisable safari landscapes. Giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas and other antelopes inhabit the park, while lions and other predators may also be encountered.
Your family will have a private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser rather than joining a shared safari vehicle. This is particularly valuable when travelling with children because the pace of the game drive can be adjusted according to the family’s needs. You can spend longer watching animals that interest the children, take breaks when necessary and enjoy greater freedom throughout the safari.
A hot safari lunch provides a comfortable break during your wildlife experience before the afternoon game drive continues. Later, leave Tarangire and travel towards the green Karatu Highlands for dinner and your second overnight stay.
The final day brings one of the greatest highlights of the safari: the Ngorongoro Crater. From the crater rim, descend approximately 600 metres onto the floor of this enormous volcanic caldera for an exciting family game drive.
Ngorongoro provides children with the opportunity to see an extraordinary variety of wildlife within a relatively compact ecosystem. Lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and numerous antelope species may all be encountered. The crater is also an important habitat for the endangered black rhinoceros, although sightings can never be guaranteed.
Throughout the journey, your professional private driver-guide can help make the experience educational as well as exciting by explaining animal behaviour, habitats, tracks and interesting facts in a way the whole family can enjoy.
After your hot lunch and final Ngorongoro game drive, ascend from the crater and continue towards Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey.
From walking beneath Mount Meru and watching elephant families beneath Tarangire’s baobabs to searching for lions and rhinos inside the Ngorongoro Crater, this 3-day Tanzania family safari from Zanzibar creates an exciting introduction to African wildlife and memories that parents and children can share long after returning home.
Safari Itinerary
Take a morning flight from Zanzibar to Arusha, where your private safari guide will welcome your family and transfer you to Arusha National Park. Explore the park’s beautiful combination of forest, grassland and the Momella Lakes beneath Mount Meru while searching for giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, monkeys and colourful birdlife. Family members who meet the applicable requirements can join an authorised armed ranger for a guided walking safari, discovering animal tracks, vegetation and smaller details of the ecosystem from ground level. For families travelling with younger children, suitable alternative arrangements can be made. Later, leave the park and continue to your family-friendly accommodation for dinner, relaxation and overnight.

FAQs
Yes. Zanzibar can easily be combined with a mainland Tanzania safari. Daily domestic flights connect Zanzibar with safari gateways such as Arusha, Kilimanjaro and airstrips in or near major national parks. Depending on your available time, you can take a short 2-day safari or plan a longer private safari before returning to Zanzibar.
For travellers looking for a short safari, Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater make an excellent combination. With additional days, you can include Serengeti National Park for a more complete Northern Circuit safari. The best option depends on how many days you have, your budget and the wildlife experience you are looking for.
We recommend at least two days for a meaningful safari from Zanzibar. A 2-day itinerary can combine Tarangire and Ngorongoro, while 3 to 4 days allows a more relaxed programme. For travellers who want to include Serengeti, Great Migration areas or multiple nights in the wilderness, 4 to 6 days or longer provides a better experience.
Yes. A 2-day private safari from Zanzibar is ideal for travellers with limited time. You can fly from Zanzibar to the Arusha or Kilimanjaro area, explore Tarangire National Park on the first day, stay overnight near Karatu, and visit the Ngorongoro Crater on the second day before continuing to the airport for your flight back to Zanzibar.
Yes, a one-day safari from Zanzibar is possible using domestic flights to selected parks. However, if your schedule allows, we recommend at least two days because it provides more wildlife viewing time and makes the experience less dependent on flight schedules. Short fly-in safaris are particularly useful for travellers who want to keep most of their holiday in Zanzibar.
Yes. Serengeti can be reached from Zanzibar using domestic flights, making a fly-in safari an excellent option when you want to reduce driving time. Depending on your itinerary, you can fly into the Serengeti and continue your safari by private 4x4 vehicle, or combine Serengeti with Ngorongoro, Tarangire and other Northern Circuit destinations.
Yes. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most popular destinations to combine with a Zanzibar holiday. You can fly from Zanzibar to the mainland and continue by private safari vehicle to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is commonly combined with Tarangire on short 2- or 3-day safaris.
Popular choices include Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on your available days and preferred routing, other destinations can also be included. We design each safari according to your available time rather than trying to fit too many parks into a short programme.
Domestic flights can be included in your Tanzania safari from Zanzibar package when specified in the itinerary and quotation. We can arrange the necessary flights together with airport transfers, safari vehicle, accommodation and park arrangements, giving you one coordinated programme from Zanzibar to the safari and back.
Yes. Scheduled domestic flights operate between Zanzibar and safari airstrips serving different parts of the Serengeti, subject to route schedules and availability. Flying directly into the Serengeti can save significant travel time and is particularly useful for shorter safaris, honeymoon trips and travellers who prefer a fly-in safari experience.
Yes, when you book a private safari with Tanzaniatrail Experience, your safari vehicle and professional driver-guide are reserved for your party. You will not be combined with unrelated travellers. This gives you greater flexibility with wildlife viewing, photography stops and the overall pace of your safari.
Yes. A safari from Zanzibar can be an excellent addition to a family beach holiday. We can adjust the programme according to the children's ages, select suitable family-friendly accommodation and avoid unnecessarily long driving days. A private safari vehicle also gives families greater flexibility for stops and daily schedules.
Yes. Zanzibar and safari are one of Tanzania's best honeymoon combinations. Couples can leave their Zanzibar beach resort for a private mainland safari and include romantic lodges, luxury tented camps, sundowners, bush meals and other special experiences before returning to Zanzibar or continuing their journey home.
Yes. Luxury safaris from Zanzibar can include domestic flights, private airport transfers, an exclusive 4x4 safari vehicle, high-end lodges or luxury tented camps and personalised safari experiences. Fly-in options can also reduce road travel and maximise the amount of time spent inside wildlife areas.
Yes. A Great Migration safari can be arranged from Zanzibar, but the correct Serengeti region depends on your travel dates. Different stages of the migration occur in different areas throughout the year. We design the itinerary according to the season and use suitable flights and camps to position you close to the expected movement of the herds.
Yes. Between approximately January and March, a safari from Zanzibar can be designed around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti during the Great Migration calving season. Flying from Zanzibar helps maximise your safari time, and we recommend spending several days in the area rather than trying to experience the calving season as a rushed day trip.
You can normally leave unnecessary beach luggage securely at your Zanzibar accommodation if you are returning to the same hotel, subject to the hotel's policy. For domestic safari flights, baggage limits can be more restrictive than international flights, so we provide the applicable luggage information before travel. Soft-sided bags are generally the most practical option.
Yes. Your safari can be designed to finish with a domestic flight back to Zanzibar. Depending on the route, you may fly from Kilimanjaro, Arusha or a safari airstrip directly to Zanzibar. We coordinate the itinerary and transfers around the available flight schedule to make the transition between safari and beach as smooth as possible.
Depending on your selected package, inclusions can cover domestic flights, airport transfers, a private 4x4 safari Land Cruiser with pop-up roof, professional driver-guide, accommodation, meals, park and conservation fees, Ngorongoro Crater fees where applicable, drinking water and safari activities. The exact inclusions are clearly shown in each itinerary and quotation.
Yes. Every safari from Zanzibar can be customised according to your available days, budget, accommodation preference and interests. We can create private safaris, family safaris, honeymoon journeys, luxury safaris, Great Migration experiences and calving season safaris. Whether you have only two days or want a longer mainland adventure, we can design the safari to fit naturally into your Zanzibar holiday.
