3 Day Nyerere & Mikumi Safari From Zanzibar
Overview
Discover two of southern Tanzania’s remarkable wildlife destinations with our 3 Day Nyerere & Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar. Designed for travellers who want to experience more than one national park while keeping their mainland safari short, this adventure combines the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park with the open savannah landscapes of Mikumi National Park before returning to Zanzibar.
The journey begins with a scheduled flight from Zanzibar towards Nyerere National Park, allowing you to move quickly from the Indian Ocean to the African wilderness. Instead of spending the first part of your safari travelling long distances by road from Dar es Salaam, flying directly into Nyerere allows your wildlife experience to begin shortly after arrival.
Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the historic Selous Game Reserve, is one of southern Tanzania’s great wilderness areas. The park is shaped by the Rufiji River and a diverse combination of woodland, grasslands, lakes and waterways. This variety of habitats supports an impressive range of wildlife and creates a safari atmosphere noticeably different from the better-known northern circuit.
During your Nyerere experience, search for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, antelopes and predators such as lions. The ecosystem is also known for African wild dogs, although these highly mobile and elusive predators can never be guaranteed. Hippos and crocodiles inhabit the rivers and waterways, while the park’s rich birdlife adds another dimension to the experience.
One of Nyerere’s greatest attractions is the opportunity to experience the wilderness from the water. Depending on arrival times and operating conditions, a boat safari on the Rufiji River can be incorporated into your first day. Travelling by boat offers a completely different perspective, with opportunities to observe hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and wildlife along the riverbanks while enjoying the scenery of one of Tanzania’s most important river systems.
After your Nyerere experience, the adventure continues overland towards Mikumi National Park. The journey between the two safari regions introduces you to another side of southern Tanzania as the landscapes gradually change along the route.
Mikumi provides a strong contrast to Nyerere. Its broad open grasslands, scattered acacia trees and distant mountain scenery create the classic image of an East African safari. The openness of the landscape can also make wildlife easier to observe across the plains.
Elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, hippos and other wildlife inhabit Mikumi, while lions are among the predators that may be encountered. Every game drive remains unpredictable because the animals move naturally throughout the ecosystem.
Combining Nyerere and Mikumi within one itinerary provides more variety than spending all three days in a single park. Nyerere introduces you to a vast river-dominated wilderness, while Mikumi delivers open savannah game viewing and a different collection of landscapes.
Throughout your journey, you will travel with a professional safari driver-guide and use a specially prepared safari vehicle for game viewing and the overland connection between the parks. Hot safari lunches can be arranged during the programme, allowing you to enjoy a more comfortable dining experience while maximising your time in the wilderness.
Your final day is dedicated to exploring Mikumi before transferring to the airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Zanzibar. Within only three days, you will have travelled from the beaches of Zanzibar to two contrasting national parks, experienced wildlife by road and potentially by boat, and discovered the character of Tanzania’s Southern Safari Circuit.
Our 3 Day Nyerere & Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar is ideal for couples, families, friends and adventurous travellers looking for a short safari with greater variety. By combining air and road connections strategically, the itinerary creates an efficient beach-to-bush experience while showcasing two distinctly different wildlife destinations.

Enjoy lunch during your safari before continuing your wildlife experience. FAQs
Yes. Zanzibar can easily be combined with a mainland Tanzania safari. Daily domestic flights connect Zanzibar with safari gateways such as Arusha, Kilimanjaro and airstrips in or near major national parks. Depending on your available time, you can take a short 2-day safari or plan a longer private safari before returning to Zanzibar.
For travellers looking for a short safari, Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater make an excellent combination. With additional days, you can include Serengeti National Park for a more complete Northern Circuit safari. The best option depends on how many days you have, your budget and the wildlife experience you are looking for.
We recommend at least two days for a meaningful safari from Zanzibar. A 2-day itinerary can combine Tarangire and Ngorongoro, while 3 to 4 days allows a more relaxed programme. For travellers who want to include Serengeti, Great Migration areas or multiple nights in the wilderness, 4 to 6 days or longer provides a better experience.
Yes. A 2-day private safari from Zanzibar is ideal for travellers with limited time. You can fly from Zanzibar to the Arusha or Kilimanjaro area, explore Tarangire National Park on the first day, stay overnight near Karatu, and visit the Ngorongoro Crater on the second day before continuing to the airport for your flight back to Zanzibar.
Yes, a one-day safari from Zanzibar is possible using domestic flights to selected parks. However, if your schedule allows, we recommend at least two days because it provides more wildlife viewing time and makes the experience less dependent on flight schedules. Short fly-in safaris are particularly useful for travellers who want to keep most of their holiday in Zanzibar.
Yes. Serengeti can be reached from Zanzibar using domestic flights, making a fly-in safari an excellent option when you want to reduce driving time. Depending on your itinerary, you can fly into the Serengeti and continue your safari by private 4x4 vehicle, or combine Serengeti with Ngorongoro, Tarangire and other Northern Circuit destinations.
Yes. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most popular destinations to combine with a Zanzibar holiday. You can fly from Zanzibar to the mainland and continue by private safari vehicle to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is commonly combined with Tarangire on short 2- or 3-day safaris.
Popular choices include Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on your available days and preferred routing, other destinations can also be included. We design each safari according to your available time rather than trying to fit too many parks into a short programme.
Domestic flights can be included in your Tanzania safari from Zanzibar package when specified in the itinerary and quotation. We can arrange the necessary flights together with airport transfers, safari vehicle, accommodation and park arrangements, giving you one coordinated programme from Zanzibar to the safari and back.
Yes. Scheduled domestic flights operate between Zanzibar and safari airstrips serving different parts of the Serengeti, subject to route schedules and availability. Flying directly into the Serengeti can save significant travel time and is particularly useful for shorter safaris, honeymoon trips and travellers who prefer a fly-in safari experience.
Yes, when you book a private safari with Tanzaniatrail Experience, your safari vehicle and professional driver-guide are reserved for your party. You will not be combined with unrelated travellers. This gives you greater flexibility with wildlife viewing, photography stops and the overall pace of your safari.
Yes. A safari from Zanzibar can be an excellent addition to a family beach holiday. We can adjust the programme according to the children's ages, select suitable family-friendly accommodation and avoid unnecessarily long driving days. A private safari vehicle also gives families greater flexibility for stops and daily schedules.
Yes. Zanzibar and safari are one of Tanzania's best honeymoon combinations. Couples can leave their Zanzibar beach resort for a private mainland safari and include romantic lodges, luxury tented camps, sundowners, bush meals and other special experiences before returning to Zanzibar or continuing their journey home.
Yes. Luxury safaris from Zanzibar can include domestic flights, private airport transfers, an exclusive 4x4 safari vehicle, high-end lodges or luxury tented camps and personalised safari experiences. Fly-in options can also reduce road travel and maximise the amount of time spent inside wildlife areas.
Yes. A Great Migration safari can be arranged from Zanzibar, but the correct Serengeti region depends on your travel dates. Different stages of the migration occur in different areas throughout the year. We design the itinerary according to the season and use suitable flights and camps to position you close to the expected movement of the herds.
Yes. Between approximately January and March, a safari from Zanzibar can be designed around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti during the Great Migration calving season. Flying from Zanzibar helps maximise your safari time, and we recommend spending several days in the area rather than trying to experience the calving season as a rushed day trip.
You can normally leave unnecessary beach luggage securely at your Zanzibar accommodation if you are returning to the same hotel, subject to the hotel's policy. For domestic safari flights, baggage limits can be more restrictive than international flights, so we provide the applicable luggage information before travel. Soft-sided bags are generally the most practical option.
Yes. Your safari can be designed to finish with a domestic flight back to Zanzibar. Depending on the route, you may fly from Kilimanjaro, Arusha or a safari airstrip directly to Zanzibar. We coordinate the itinerary and transfers around the available flight schedule to make the transition between safari and beach as smooth as possible.
Depending on your selected package, inclusions can cover domestic flights, airport transfers, a private 4x4 safari Land Cruiser with pop-up roof, professional driver-guide, accommodation, meals, park and conservation fees, Ngorongoro Crater fees where applicable, drinking water and safari activities. The exact inclusions are clearly shown in each itinerary and quotation.
Yes. Every safari from Zanzibar can be customised according to your available days, budget, accommodation preference and interests. We can create private safaris, family safaris, honeymoon journeys, luxury safaris, Great Migration experiences and calving season safaris. Whether you have only two days or want a longer mainland adventure, we can design the safari to fit naturally into your Zanzibar holiday.
