2 Day Tanzania Great Migration Safari
Overview
The 2 Day Tanzania Great Migration Safari is a short yet rewarding adventure designed for travelers who want to experience the legendary Great Migration in the Northern Serengeti while making the most of limited time in Tanzania. Combining a scenic flight from Arusha, exceptional wildlife viewing in one of the Serengeti’s most remote regions, and an adventurous drive back to Arusha through the Lake Natron route, this itinerary offers an exciting introduction to Tanzania’s northern wilderness.
Your journey begins in Arusha with a scheduled flight to the Northern Serengeti, allowing you to avoid the long overland journey and reach the migration area quickly. The flight itself provides a beautiful perspective of northern Tanzania as the scenery changes from populated highlands to vast plains and untouched wilderness. Upon arrival at the airstrip, you will meet your professional safari guide and begin your first game drive in a private 4×4 safari vehicle.
The Northern Serengeti is particularly famous for hosting the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of the greatest natural spectacles on Earth. Every year, enormous herds of wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, move across the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. During the migration season in the north, particularly from around July through October, the herds gather around the Mara River and surrounding plains. This is the period associated with the famous river crossings, when wildebeest may plunge into the water as they continue their ancient migration route.
While witnessing a river crossing can never be guaranteed because the movement of wildlife is entirely natural, exploring this region during migration season provides excellent opportunities to see large concentrations of animals. The presence of thousands of wildebeest and zebra also attracts predators. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and crocodiles are among the species that make the Northern Serengeti an extraordinary destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
Beyond the migration, the Northern Serengeti offers beautiful scenery and an impressive variety of resident wildlife. Elephants may be seen moving between woodland areas, giraffes browse among acacia trees, buffalo gather across open grasslands, and antelope species are scattered throughout the plains. The remote character of northern Serengeti also creates a genuine wilderness atmosphere that makes every game drive feel adventurous and exclusive.
After spending your first day exploring the migration areas, you will enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in the Northern Serengeti. The sounds of the African wilderness provide the perfect background to an evening in one of Tanzania’s most celebrated wildlife destinations.
The following morning, you will return to the Serengeti plains for a half-day game drive. Early morning is an excellent period for wildlife viewing because temperatures are cooler and predators may still be active after the night. Your guide will explore productive areas based on current wildlife movements, giving you another opportunity to search for migration herds and the Serengeti’s resident animals.
Later, you will leave the Serengeti and begin the adventurous overland journey back to Arusha through the Lake Natron road. This route reveals a completely different side of northern Tanzania, characterized by remote valleys, Maasai landscapes and dramatic volcanic scenery. The journey may offer views toward Lake Natron and the impressive Ol Doinyo Lengai, known by the Maasai as the “Mountain of God.”
This two-day safari is therefore much more than a quick visit to the Serengeti. It combines the excitement of the Great Migration, classic African wildlife, spectacular scenery, a scenic flight and an adventurous road journey through one compact itinerary—perfect for travelers seeking an unforgettable taste of Tanzania’s wilderness.

FAQs
The Great Migration is the largest land-based wildlife migration on Earth, involving over 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebras, and thousands of gazelles as they move in a circular path through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. This incredible journey is filled with dramatic scenes of river crossings, predator hunts, calving, and long-distance movement—making it one of the most breathtaking wildlife spectacles in the world.
The migration is year-round, but the best time depends on what you want to see:
Dec–Mar (Calving Season): Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) – Wildebeest give birth; predator action is intense.
Apr–May (Green Season): Central Serengeti – Herds begin moving north.
Jun–July (Grumeti River Crossings): Western Serengeti – Smaller river crossings; good predator sightings.
Aug–Oct (Mara River Crossings): Northern Serengeti – Dramatic river crossings, crocodile attacks.
Nov: Herds return south toward Ndutu.
No. While wildebeest dominate the scene, the migration includes zebras, gazelles, and eland, as well as predators like lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals, and vultures. It's an interconnected drama of prey and predators across the plains.
The migration is continuous and cyclical, with the herds covering 1,800+ km (1,100+ miles) each year. It’s a full-year phenomenon, not just a single event.
Ideally, 6–12 days allow for deep exploration, including time in Serengeti, Ndutu, and/or Ngorongoro Crater. This provides flexibility to track the herds and enjoy other parks along the way.
Yes! The migration can be part of a romantic honeymoon, family safari, or photography tour. It’s perfect for all ages, although kids under 6 may need custom arrangements.
While Kenya's Maasai Mara is part of the migration route, Tanzania hosts 80% of the migration—including calving season and longer durations of the herds' stay. Tanzania offers more diversity and larger wildlife populations over a longer period.
Yes. Popular combinations include:
Ngorongoro Crater
Tarangire National Park
