Your adventure starts in Arusha and proceeds to Olpopong Maasai Cultural Village, one of the most authentic Maasai cultural experiences in Tanzania. Here you will be welcomed in a traditional Maasai community, learn about their fascinating customs, traditional ceremonies, livestock-based lifestyle and their deep connection with nature. Cultural activities, traditional bomas, Maasai medicine and insight into one of Africa’s most iconic indigenous cultures, whilst supporting sustainable community tourism.
The cultural journey continues with a visit to the lush foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro where you will hike to the spectacular Materuni Waterfalls through beautiful coffee and banana plantations. You will have an authentic Chagga coffee experience, learn how locally grown Arabica coffee is cultivated, roasted, ground and brewed using traditional methods before sampling one of Tanzania’s best coffees.
From here, head north to the dramatic landscapes of Lake Natron, one of Tanzania’s most unique destinations. Below Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano the Maasai call the “Mountain of God”, lies Lake Natron. The scenery is stunning and unlike anywhere else in East Africa. While here you will enjoy a guided walking safari through this amazing environment, visit nearby Maasai communities, take in the dramatic volcanic landscapes and learn about the lake’s famous flamingo breeding grounds while discovering the traditions of the Maasai who have lived in harmony with this environment for generations.
The safari continues to the legendary Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of Africa’s best wildlife destinations. The Serengeti is a vast area of endless plains, acacia woodlands, granite kopjes and rivers, covering nearly 15,000 square kilometres, and forms the backdrop for the spectacular Great Wildebeest Migration, when over two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move across the ecosystem in search of new grazing. Over the course of your 3 nights in the park, you will have excellent chances to observe lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, jackals and hundreds of bird species as you explore one of the richest wildlife ecosystems on earth.
You proceed with your journey through the magnificent Ngorongoro Conservation Area where you descend into the world famous Ngorongoro Crater. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, and is one of the best places in the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera to see the Big Five, including the threatened black rhinoceros.
You’ll also meet the Hadzabe Tribe, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa, and the Datoga Tribe, known for their traditional blacksmithing skills. These genuine visits offer a fascinating insight into how of ways of life preserved for thousands of years, while supporting local communities and providing meaningful cultural exchanges.
Before you leave the mainland you will have one last safari, this time in Tarangire National Park. This park is famous for its giant baobab trees, its permanent river and its impressive herds of elephants. An ideal last chapter to your mainland adventure before flying to Zanzibar, it is a land of spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife.
Your journey concludes on the beautiful island of Zanzibar with four days of tropical relaxation ahead of you. At the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) you will be greeted by one of the Tanzaniatrail Experience representatives with a warm welcome and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Check in and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Tanzania’s safari capital, relax after your international journey.
