16 Day Tanzania Great Migration Safari + Zanzibar Sands & Sunset
Overview
This 16-day Tanzania Great Migration Safari + Zanzibar adventure is designed for travelers seeking the perfect balance of wildlife action, cultural encounters, dramatic landscapes, and serene beach relaxation. It combines the best of Tanzania’s northern circuit—Arusha National Park, Lake Natron, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park—with the calm turquoise shores of Zanzibar. From the roaring energy of migrating herds to the peaceful rhythm of island life, this journey tells a complete story of Tanzania’s natural beauty.
Your safari begins in Arusha National Park, a place of lush forests, sparkling lakes, and Mount Meru rising dramatically above the landscape. A walking safari here provides intimate, eye-level encounters with giraffes, buffalo, and monkeys—setting the tone for adventure and photography.
From Arusha, the path shifts dramatically to Lake Natron, one of the most extraordinary volcanic landscapes in East Africa. Here, flamingos color the alkaline waters pink, mineral flats crack into surreal textures, waterfalls hide in deep canyons, and the sacred volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai stands like a guardian over the land. Maasai culture, ancient footprints, scenic hikes, and dramatic sunrise light all make Natron a photographic paradise.
Your journey then moves into the world-famous Serengeti—heart of the Great Migration. Depending on the season, you may explore the southern plains during calving, the central Serengeti during the large grazing movements, or the northern Serengeti where the dramatic river crossings occur. For three full days, you follow the rhythm of the herds and the predators that shadow them—lions, cheetahs, hyenas, leopards—capturing dramatic scenes of life, movement, and survival. Sunrise, sunset, golden plains, and endless horizons offer a photographic dream at every turn.
Leaving the Serengeti, your route winds through the cool highlands into the Ngorongoro Crater, a natural wonder often described as Eden on Earth. The crater floor concentrates lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and flamingos in one breathtaking setting. After exploring this wildlife paradise, you continue into Karatu and visit the Hadzabe Tribe—one of the last hunter-gatherer groups in Africa. Their unique culture, fire-making skills, bow-hunting traditions, and ancient lifestyle offer an unforgettable cultural experience.
Your final moments in the northern circuit take you to Tarangire National Park, where elephant herds roam under towering baobabs and the Tarangire River creates a lifeline for wildlife. After this scenic game drive, you return to Arusha before flying to Zanzibar the next morning.
The last part of your journey unfolds on the idyllic shores of Nungwi Beach in Zanzibar. For three full days, you enjoy soft white sand, calm turquoise waters, sailing dhows, fresh seafood, sunsets, and the peaceful rhythm of island life. You may choose to swim, snorkel around Mnemba, visit Stone Town, explore spice farms, or simply unwind with ocean views. Nungwi is one of the most beautiful beaches in East Africa—perfect for honeymooners, families, couples, or anyone seeking a gentle ending to their safari adventure.
This 16-day safari blends excitement and relaxation, culture and wilderness, dramatic landscapes and tropical beauty. It captures the heart of Tanzania: raw, warm, wild, and incredibly diverse. From the roar of the Serengeti to the whisper of the Indian Ocean, this journey leaves you with memories and photographs that last a lifetime.

Today you explore Arusha National Park, a hidden gem filled with lush forests, soda lakes, and open glades. Begin with a scenic game drive as Mount Meru rises dramatically above the landscape. You’ll spot colobus monkeys, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, and flamingos around the Momella Lakes. Mid-morning, you embark on a guided walking safari—an unforgettable experience that allows you to observe animals from ground level. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you walk through quiet paths, capturing photos of giraffes, birds, forest vegetation, and volcanic scenery up close. The mixture of driving and walking provides a perfect introduction to Tanzania’s wilderness. After your adventure, return to Arusha for a relaxed evening.
After breakfast, your journey heads into the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Natron. The landscapes shift dramatically—from green highlands to dusty volcanic plains shaped by ancient geological activity. As you approach Natron, the iconic volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai dominates the skyline, creating a dramatic backdrop. Upon arrival, check into your camp overlooking the vast, shimmering lake. In the afternoon, take a guided walk near the lakeshore to witness flamingos feeding, mineral crust patterns, and expansive desert-like views. The light at sunset turns the lake golden and pink, offering some of the most unique photographic opportunities of your safari. Dinner and overnight in Natron.
Today is dedicated to exploring the raw and beautiful landscapes of Lake Natron. Begin at sunrise along the lakeshore, photographing flamingos as they gather in large flocks. The cracked mineral flats create abstract designs perfect for artistic images. After breakfast, set out on a guided hike through a rocky gorge to reach the Engaresero Waterfall—a refreshing oasis surrounded by steep cliffs. Enjoy time swimming, relaxing, and photographing the dramatic scenery. Later, visit a Maasai village to learn about their traditions, daily life, and pastoral culture. Their colorful attire contrasts beautifully with the barren backdrop, offering cultural portraits. End your day with golden-hour views over the lake.
Depart Natron after breakfast and drive toward the legendary Serengeti. The scenery gradually transforms from volcanic plains into rolling grasslands rich with wildlife. As you enter the park, your game drive begins immediately. Expect sightings of giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, elephants, lions, and birds of prey soaring overhead. Depending on the season, you may already meet the outskirts of the Great Migration. Continue game driving en route to your camp, arriving in time for sunset. Enjoy dinner under a sky full of stars as distant animal calls echo across the plains.
These three full days are devoted entirely to exploring the Serengeti and tracking the Great Migration. At sunrise, predators are most active—lions on the move, cheetahs scanning the horizon, hyenas interacting, and leopards descending from trees. Your guide positions you based on the seasonal location of the herds, whether in the south (calving), central (mass grazing), or north (river crossings). You’ll enjoy picnic lunches in the bush to maximize time in the field. Expect action scenes, dramatic light, herd movement, big cats, elephants, and panoramic vistas. Each afternoon, you continue exploring different areas of the park before returning to camp for storytelling and relaxation around the fire.
After breakfast, enjoy a final Serengeti game drive as you head toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Descend into the iconic Ngorongoro Crater, a natural amphitheater filled with wildlife. The crater floor is home to lions, buffalo, elephants, flamingos, hippos, hyenas, wildebeest, and the rare black rhino. The high crater walls and dramatic landscapes create perfect photographic compositions. After a full exploration, ascend the crater rim and continue to Karatu for dinner and overnight in the cool highlands.
This morning, drive to Lake Eyasi to meet the Hadzabe Tribe, one of the last hunter-gatherer groups in Africa. Experience their unique way of life as they demonstrate hunting techniques, fire making, foraging, and traditional songs. Photograph their natural interactions with the environment and learn how they survive in the wild using ancient skills. After this enriching cultural exchange, return to Karatu before lunch for a hot meal. Spend the afternoon relaxing at your lodge or taking a gentle walk around the gardens.
After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park for a final game drive in the northern circuit. Tarangire offers spectacular views of baobab forests, large elephant herds, giraffes, zebras, and colorful birdlife. Enjoy your safari as you follow the Tarangire River, where animals gather to drink and predators wait in the tall grass. After lunch, begin your journey back to Arusha. Arrive in the late afternoon for relaxation, dinner, and overnight—preparing for tomorrow’s flight to Zanzibar.
This morning, transfer to Arusha Airport for your flight to Zanzibar. As you land, the scenery shifts from savannas to palm-fringed beaches and turquoise water. Your driver transfers you to your resort in Nungwi, known for its soft white sand and calm, swimmable ocean. Spend the afternoon relaxing, enjoying the pool, or taking a walk along the beach. The sunset in Nungwi is breathtaking, with glowing colors reflecting across the water.
These three days are entirely yours to enjoy the beauty of Zanzibar at your own pace. Relax on the beach, swim in crystal-clear water, or indulge in spa treatments. Optional activities include snorkeling at Mnemba Island, sunset dhow cruises, Stone Town tours, spice farm visits, diving, or sandbank picnics. Nungwi is perfect for honeymooners, couples, families, and anyone who wants a gentle, peaceful conclusion to their safari. Evenings are magical—fresh seafood dinners, soft ocean breezes, and star-filled skies.
After breakfast, enjoy your final hours in Zanzibar before your transfer to the airport. As you depart Tanzania, you carry memories of roaring lions, dramatic migrations, volcanic landscapes, Maasai culture, and gentle ocean waves. Your 16-day adventure comes to an end—but its impact stays forever.

FAQs
The Great Migration is the largest land-based wildlife migration on Earth, involving over 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebras, and thousands of gazelles as they move in a circular path through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. This incredible journey is filled with dramatic scenes of river crossings, predator hunts, calving, and long-distance movement—making it one of the most breathtaking wildlife spectacles in the world.
The migration is year-round, but the best time depends on what you want to see:
Dec–Mar (Calving Season): Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) – Wildebeest give birth; predator action is intense.
Apr–May (Green Season): Central Serengeti – Herds begin moving north.
Jun–July (Grumeti River Crossings): Western Serengeti – Smaller river crossings; good predator sightings.
Aug–Oct (Mara River Crossings): Northern Serengeti – Dramatic river crossings, crocodile attacks.
Nov: Herds return south toward Ndutu.
No. While wildebeest dominate the scene, the migration includes zebras, gazelles, and eland, as well as predators like lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals, and vultures. It's an interconnected drama of prey and predators across the plains.
The migration is continuous and cyclical, with the herds covering 1,800+ km (1,100+ miles) each year. It’s a full-year phenomenon, not just a single event.
Ideally, 6–12 days allow for deep exploration, including time in Serengeti, Ndutu, and/or Ngorongoro Crater. This provides flexibility to track the herds and enjoy other parks along the way.
Yes! The migration can be part of a romantic honeymoon, family safari, or photography tour. It’s perfect for all ages, although kids under 6 may need custom arrangements.
While Kenya's Maasai Mara is part of the migration route, Tanzania hosts 80% of the migration—including calving season and longer durations of the herds' stay. Tanzania offers more diversity and larger wildlife populations over a longer period.
Yes. Popular combinations include:
Ngorongoro Crater
Tarangire National Park
Lake Manyara
Zanzibar beach extension
Tanzaniatrail can tailor your trip based on your interests and timing.
