13 Day Tanzania Safari + Zanzibar Relaxation

Overview

An unforgettable 13 Day Tanzania Safari + Zanzibar experience has been carefully designed to showcase the very best of Tanzania’s wildlife, landscapes, vibrant cultures and idyllic tropical coastline. This is an extraordinary safari combining exciting game drives in Africa’s most famous national parks with genuine cultural experiences and the perfect beach getaway on the world-renowned island of Zanzibar. Whether travelling as a couple, family, group of friends, honeymooners or celebrating a special occasion, this itinerary combines just the right amount of adventure, relaxation and cultural discovery.

Your journey starts in Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania and the entry point to the country’s famous Northern Safari Circuit. Arusha, set under the beautiful slopes of Mount Meru, is the perfect introduction to your African adventure before heading to the lush foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro to visit the lovely village of Materuni. Here you will discover the colourful traditions of the Chagga people, stroll through stunning coffee plantations, witness the awe-inspiring Materuni Waterfalls and enjoy an authentic coffee-making experience with ancient techniques handed down through generations. This special cultural excursion offers an unforgettable insight into local life whilst showing one of the most scenic areas of Tanzania.

From Arusha your safari adventure continues to the magnificent Tarangire National Park. This is a hidden treasure, famous for its ancient baobab trees and seasonal swamps and it has one of the largest populations of elephants in East Africa. The Tarangire River supports incredible concentrations of wildlife all year round and offers superb game viewing opportunities. You will look for elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeest, impalas, warthogs and a fantastic variety of birds, making Tarangire one of the most rewarding, but often overlooked safari destinations in Tanzania.

The adventure then leads us to the legendary Serengeti National Park, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Serengeti is famed for its endless golden plains and amazing biodiversity with unforgettable safari experiences all year round. The timing of the season may enable you to observe the spectacular Great Migration, with hundreds of thousands of wildebeests and zebras crossing the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing, closely pursued by predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas. In addition to the migration, the Serengeti offers great wildlife sightings, stunning scenery and fantastic photographic opportunities, making every game drive unique.

No Northern Tanzania safari would be complete without a visit to the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as Africa’s Garden of Eden. The crater hosts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the continent and is the result of a collapsed volcanic caldera formed millions of years ago. A descent of over 600 metres to the crater floor reveals a thriving ecosystem where elephants, black rhinos, lions, buffalo, hippos, flamingos, hyenas, gazelles and countless other species co-exist in one extraordinary natural setting. It’s often regarded as one of the best places to spot the legendary Big Five in one day in Africa.

Before heading to the mainland, enjoy a true cultural experience in the colourful village of Mto wa Mbu – one of Tanzania’s most culturally diverse communities. The village is home to more than 120 ethnic groups and visitors can explore local markets and banana plantations, traditional homes, artisan workshops and village life, mixing with the welcoming local people. This enriching experience offers a deeper insight into Tanzania’s amazing cultural heritage beyond its incredible wildlife.

After your unforgettable safari, your adventure continues to the enchanting island of Zanzibar for four blissful days on the pristine white sands of Kendwa Beach. Kendwa on the stunning northern coast of the island is known for its crystal clear turquoise waters, powder-white beaches, breathtaking sunsets and laid back atmosphere. Kendwa is the perfect tropical escape after your safari adventure whether you want to relax by the ocean, swim in the warm Indian Ocean, pamper yourself with a spa treatment or participate in optional activities like snorkelling, scuba diving, paddleboarding, jet skiing, kayaking, deep-sea fishing or a traditional sunset dhow cruise.

Complement your island experience by visiting the charming fishing village of Nungwi and the historic Stone Town, the cultural heart of Zanzibar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll along its narrow, winding streets, take in the beautifully carved wooden doors, explore the lively local markets, visit fascinating historical landmarks, and discover the rich mix of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian and European influences that have shaped the island’s unique identity over the centuries.

This 13 Day Tanzania Safari + Zanzibar is the perfect combination of thrilling wildlife viewing, beautiful scenery, authentic cultural experiences and luxury beach relaxation. Every day promises unforgettable moments, from the impressive elephants of Tarangire and the vast plains of the Serengeti to the stunning Ngorongoro Crater and the turquoise waters of Zanzibar. Whether it is your first safari to Africa or a return visit after many years, this well crafted journey delivers memories to last a lifetime and shows you exactly why Tanzania is considered one of the world’s finest safari and beach destinations.

Safaris can be 2 to 14 days or longer. Most travellers opt for between 5 and 8 days to comfortably cover several national parks, but longer safaris offer more time to track the Great Migration or combine wildlife with cultural experiences and Zanzibar.

Sure. Many of our clients opt to end their safari with a relaxing beach holiday in Zanzibar. Domestic flights run daily and it is easy to combine the incredible wildlife of Tanzania with the white sand beaches and turquoise waters of Zanzibar.

Most international visitors require a Tanzanian tourist visa, usually available either online or on arrival, depending on nationality. We also recommend that you discuss recommended vaccinations and malaria prevention with your healthcare provider prior to travel.

Yeah. All our safaris are done in a private 4x4 safari vehicle with a professional English speaking driver-guide unless you specifically ask for a shared safari, so you can travel at your own pace and have a personalised safari experience.
